Left Forum and Occupy The Town Square News

The Jill Stein NYC visit was a great success. Jill appeared on two panels at the Left Forum, connected with Occupiers in Zuccotti Park on Saturday and was the guest of honor at two fundraisers. Together, the house parties raised over $3500. Over 50 Green Party members participated in more than a dozen panels at the Left Forum and staffed a community table throughout the weekend.

And this past Sunday, Greens attended a great community-building event organized by Occupy Wall Street in Fort Greene Park — Occupy Town Square! GPBK had a table and facilitated a teach-in on independent politics and the movement.

Green Party Candidate for U.S. Senate Nominated
At an extraordinary meeting of the state committee of the Green Party of NYS, Colia Clark, 2010 GP U.S. Senate candidate, was unanimously nominated as the party’s U.S. Senate candidate for 2012.

Visit Colia’s campaign site here!

Green Party Congressional Candidates from Brooklyn

At the March Park Slope Greens meeting, Greens met with and gave support for two fantastic Congressional candidates to run on the Green Party line.

Colin Beavan: also known as No Impact Man, he will stand for office in Congressional District 8. Colin’s No Impact Man experiment exploded in the media after being featured in the New York Times, and he has since come to be an engaging spokesperson on environmental issues.

Vivia Morgan: construction worker and community activist in a mostly Caribbean community that is now part of the new Congressional District 9. Vivia’s work in her community and now commitment to run for office is an inspiring example of how to stand up for Green values.

Petitioning has already started, so here’s how you can help!

1. Registered Greens can click here to go to the NYTimes.com redistricting map and see if their address falls within districts 8 or 9. If so, email petition@gpbk.org so we can meet to get your signature.

2. If you’re a registered Green in Brooklyn then you can help gather signatures for our candidates. Vivia and Colin each need roughly 50 signatures from registered Greens in their respective districts. Email petition@gpbk.org and we can arrange for you to pick up signatures from fellow nearby Greens.

3. Petitioning is only the beginning! To find out how you can support these candidates in the coming campaign, email campaign2012@gpbk.org. These campaigns to build the Green Party in Brooklyn need the time and talent of activists, designers, writers, programmers, and community builders just like you.

Seeking Interest in Green Party Judicial Committee

The Green Party of Brooklyn at its January meeting approved the formation of a Judicial Committee to screen Green candidates for Judge in Brooklyn. This would entail doing background information, reviewing applications, and interviewing candidates. The work of the committee would primarily be from mid summer to mid October.

We are currently seeking the involvement of Green Party members in Brooklyn, both lawyers and non-lawyers to ascertain if there is enough interest to move forward with this committee. We are seeking a committee of 3 -5 enrolled greens (at least two of which would be lawyers). After recruiting enrolled Greens, the party would then seek the involvement of community groups. If you are interested or have questions, please contact Daniel Schaffer at Danielschaf@gmail.com.

March on the United Nations on Human Rights Day
This year, two-thirds of state legislatures have introduced laws that undermine the right to vote. Early voting and Sunday voting are under attack, photo ID requirements will introduce the first financial and document barrier to voting since the poll tax, and racially-motivated bans on ex-felons will wipe tens of thousands off the rolls.

This effort is unprecedented, it is coordinated, and it is targeted. African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, Native Americans, students, working women, seniors and immigrants of all colors will be disproportionately affected.

The right to vote is the heart of our democracy. Throughout our history Americans have been murdered for defending this basic human right. We will not let it be taken away from millions today.

When: December 10th, 11:00 AM

We need a hardcore Green Cleanup Team TONIGHT
at Occupy Wall Street.

Mayor Bloomberg wants Occupiers to “temporarily” leave Zuccotti Park on Friday so NYC Sanitation can clean the park, but City Hall and the NYPD have proved they cannot be trusted to respect protestors’ rights or safety. So tonight (Thursday 10/13) the Occupation is staging a Community Cleanup to eliminate this pretext for evicting a peaceful demonstration.

Reach out to friends/family/anyone to donate or purchase:

brooms, dust pans and mops

squeegees and buckets

garbage bags

power washers and any other cleaning supplies

Donations go to the Sanitation Station at Zuccotti Park.

Join us TONIGHT, after the General Assembly (which tend to end between 9pm and 10pm), so the Greens can join the full-camp cleanup session. Be seen being Green, and HELP US CLEAN!

Zuccotti Park is at the corner of Liberty Street and Broadway, take the 4/5 to Wall Street or the N/R to Rector Street. Call Michael at 917-825-3562 or email michael@gpbk.org with questions.

Sign-ups for future Occupy Wall Street tabling and donations can be found at http://www.greenpartynyc.org

Call 311 and Tell The Mayor’s Office To Keep Their Hands Off The Occupation!

Stand With Zuccotti Park at 6am Friday Morning To Stand For Peaceable Assembly!

1. Organizing Group Donations Of Clothes

Autumn is in full swing and NYC is getting cooler and wetter. Donate warm clothes and other essential items to keep the occupation strong!

sweatshirts

sweatpants

towels

blankets

sleeping bags

socks

instant heat packs

feminine hygiene products

watertight bins for storage and transport (large and small)

Greens are coordinating group donations on a weekly basis. To contribute, please fill out our donation form and email dani@gpbk.org if you have questions. Let the occupiers know that Greens care!

2. Donate Kitchen Space, Your Shower, or Extra Bed For a Night

The #OccupyWallSt kitchen crew has a fair amount of food to work with, but they need places to cook and prepare healthy meals for the occupiers. Tell us when you can host a cooking team in your kitchen, and help the occupation without having to leave home! You can also host occupiers who have been in the park for days or weeks, and just need access to a shower and a warm bed for the night.

As a resident New Yorker, you can provide an invaluable service to the courageous out-of-towners who traveled here to fight corporate rule. Fill out the hosting arrangement form and email eaganann35@gmail.com with questions.

3. March With The Greens This Wednesday In Downtown Manhattan

A coalition will march to Wall Street in solidarity with the Occupation this Wednesday (10/05/2011) at 4:30pm. Meet the Green Bloc in front of J&R World, 1 Park Row at Ann Street at 4:30pm and we’ll link up with the march! Email michael@gpbk.org or call 917-825-3562 with any questions.

Other ways to help: Greens have been fighting the corporate domination of government for a long time, so now it’s even more important to be seen being Green! Help table in front of Zuccotti Park, register new voters, or even just help hold up a Green banner. Email michael@gpbk.org to get on the schedule. You can also attend Occupation General Assembly and Working Group meetings to help keep the Green Movement plugged in.
