Join Us on May 27 For – Brotha Vegan: Black Men Speak on Food Identity, Health, and Society

By   May 19, 2021
Dear Greens and supporters,

Spring is here, and we hope all of you are doing well. Revolutionaries know that even as the city stabilizes, the parties of war and Wall Street inflict harm on people and planet for their profits. For all of us, spring is a time to take action and step up our political education, which is why we’re kicking it off with an important event later this month. The Green Party of Brooklyn invites you to a livestream with our own Omowale Adewale, founder of Black VegFest and editor of Brotha Vegan: Black Men Speak on Food, Identity, Health, and Society (2021), for a discussion of the book.

When: Thursday, May 27, 8 pm
You’ll be sent a Zoom link when you RSVP. The event will also be livestreamed on the GPNY Facebook page.

Join The Discussion: Whatever Happened to Left Solidarity?

By   November 24, 2020
Dear Greens and supporters,

The electoral frenzy may be slowing down, but activism and organizing are ramping up. Eco-socialists and others on the left need to collaborate and connect as never before to push back against Empire.

How do we do this, and can it really happen? Join the Green Party of Brooklyn with special guest Howie Hawkins, Green Party Presidential candidate and longtime eco-socialist, to discuss Howie’s CounterPunch article “What Ever Happened to Left Solidarity?”

When: Tuesday, December 1, 8 pm
You’ll be sent a link to the article and the virtual meeting space when you RSVP.

All are welcome to share ideas, thoughts, and analysis in a respectful, comradely way.

By   November 11, 2020
Dear Greens and supporters,

We’re furious. Livid. Seething.

The Democrats spent the last four years demonizing the Green Party. They blamed us for their failures.

They told lies about Jill Stein acting like a Russian tool. We saw how they undemocratically kicked us off the ballot in state after state, but continued to cynically whip up hysteria about a vote for Green candidates.

Then, the coup de grace: Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the Democratic Party rammed a change to election law into a pandemic budget, one that tripled the amount of votes we needed to retain ballot access.

They wrote the law so it would kick in this year, seven months after they passed it.

We’re angry because they’ve very nearly succeeded. We didn’t receive the number of votes we needed on November 3.

Now is not the time to lie down – we intend to fight. But we need your help.

Donate to our Save the Green Party fund!

We’re going to take this fight to court – and we’re going to win. A judge already struck this law down once. We’re confident they will again.

But we need your help. Please donate so we can continue the fight.

Get involved. Get in contact with your local Green chapter. We’re going to keep building an independent, ecosocialist party that fights for single-payer healthcare, a real Green New Deal, and grassroots democracy.

Your Vote Can Help Save the Green Party in New York!

By   October 6, 2020
Hello again Greens and supporters!

Early voting starts October 24, and Election Day is only 30 days away, on November 3! Your help is needed to save the Green Party ballot line in New York State by getting out the vote for the Hawkins/Walker campaign! Months ago, Gov. Cuomo hatched a scheme to kill off the Green Party and other alternative parties in NY.

Although the Green Party is working with other alternative parties to legally challenge Cuomo’s extreme voter disenfranchisement, we may not prevail in the courts. If not, we’re required to get 130,000 votes in the presidential race or 2% of votes cast, just to maintain our ballot line!

Never before have New York’s political parties been required to qualify for ballot access during a presidential election. Previously, ballot access for any party was only required in the governor’s race. For Cuomo to change these laws suddenly, with no public comment, in the middle of a pandemic, is outrageous and utterly undemocratic.

HERE’S HOW YOU CAN HELP:

Phone Banking
Sign up with the Hawkins/Walker campaign to make phone calls to NY voters and encourage them to vote Green. The calling process is VERY easy, done through CallHub, which makes calls for you! Just log in on your home computer and your own cell phone, then simply check boxes on your computer screen when each call is done. It’s EXTREMELY important to make these calls to get out the vote to SAVE OUR BALLOT LINE! Sign up or contact Sandy at sandyprzybylak@live.com.

In-Person Flyering
Green Party of Brooklyn is doing in-person flyering at the Grand Army Plaza farmers market and other locations. If you’re able, join us and encourage folks to vote Green. We’ll supply all literature. RSVP to Dani at 347-218-3107 for exact times/locations or pick up literature and flyer on your own, at any location.

  • Saturday and Sunday, October 10 and 11
  • Saturday and Sunday, October 17 and 18

Give to the NY State ballot defense fund.

ALSO:

In-Person Antiwar Demonstration
Wednesday, October 7, 4:30-6 pm
Manhattan Bridge Plaza at Canal and Bowery
(two blocks from War Resisters League national office)

GPBK has endorsed this important in-person antiwar event sponsored by WRL. Participate and speak out for peace and against 19 years of the U.S. war in Afghanistan. Learn more on Facebook.

We’ve Missed You. Hawkins-Walker Campaign Fights for Climate and Racial Justice

By   September 11, 2020
Greetings Greens and supporters,

It’s been awhile since we’ve checked in with you, and we hope everyone’s stayed safe and healthy during this challenging spring and summer. There have been fewer Green Party of Brooklyn emails lately, but there’s been a lot of Green Party activity! NYC Greens raised their voices in outrage in the streets and the media after the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department. (Read the Green Party of NYC response to Black Lives Matter protests.)

The Green Party of the U.S. held its first-ever completely virtual Presidential Nominating Convention, on July 11, with 21 New York delegates attending. You probably know about our amazing presidential ticket of Howie Hawkins and Angela Walker. Make sure to visit their website right now and sign up for campaign news, because there’s a lot happening that you won’t want to miss. Read on for campaign events coming up this month. We look forward to seeing you!

Wednesday, September 16, 7 pm GPBK holds our first virtual meet-and-greet, including a conversation about our presidential campaign. Make this event a success and join us! RSVP and we’ll send you the Zoom link.

Sunday, September 20, 1 pm Kick off Climate Week NYC by joining Howie and our Green Party contingent at the Climate Justice through Racial Justice march and rally. Starting at “Columbus Circle,” the event will make clear the intersection of climate and racial justice, with an emphasis on racial justice setting the tone for the week of actions. The goal is a contingent of at least 25 Greens, so please sign up. The campaign will provide signs and literature. More details to follow!

September 18-20 is the Hawkins-Walker campaign NYC weekend, with three socially distanced events you can participate in:

  • Friday, 9/18, 11 am March with Howie from Wall Street to City Hall and attend his press conference. Howie and dozens of community members rally at the Federal Hall National Memorial on Wall Street to demand billions of Stock Transfer Tax funds be used to bail out small businesses—not Wall Street—and pay for essential services like health care, education, and climate mitigation.
  • Saturday, 9/19, 6 pm Howie Hawkins and Margaret Kimberley, journalist, author, and senior columnist of the Black Agenda Report, are special guests at a socially distanced, backyard campaign fundraiser. Labor rights organizer and vice presidential candidate Angela Walker also joins the event virtually. Hors d’oeuvres and beverages served. For location details please make a donation at:  https://howiehawkins.us/events/meet-howie-hawkins-and-margaret-kimberly-in-the-bronx-nyc/
  • Sunday, 9/20, 1 pm Kick off Climate Week NYC at the Climate Justice through Racial Justice march and rally. (See details above.)

Staying Green in Quarantine

By   April 24, 2020
Dear Greens and Green supporters,

We hope you’re safe and well during this public health crisis that has affected us in so many ways. The Green Party’s message has never been more relevant as we see the limitations and misguided priorities of a for-profit healthcare system coupled with a stimulus package that falls short in providing the robust assistance needed for cities and states. The Green Party—from the national to the state to our hometown of Brooklyn—continues to be a voice of sanity and sustainability as we navigate this challenging time.

The big news is the 2020 Presidential election. If you haven’t gotten the message already, here’s the information you need as a registered Green or supporting member (legally barred from registering to vote) to participate in our Presidential preference vote by absentee ballot.

VOTE!
Visit Green Party of New York 2020convention for the downloadable ballot and instructions. Ballots must be postmarked by May 9. If you can’t print the ballot, contact gloria@gpbk.org or 917-886-4538 to receive a blank ballot.

JOIN US!
GPNY will hold a virtual State Committee meeting and Presidential Nominating Convention on Saturday, May 16. Please fill out the RSVP form to attend.

MEET THE CANDIDATES!
GPNY is hosting an online Presidential forum on Thursday evening, April 29, with the three candidates who have met Green Party of the U.S. criteria as officially recognized candidates. Details coming soon!

Let’s Get Together!
Green Party of Brooklyn will hold a virtual membership meeting and forum in mid-May. Stay tuned for details. Get in touch with our GPBK secretary at gloria@gpbk.org or 917-886-4538 for more info.

Attn Greens! Vote for President. Join us for Candidate Livestream and May 16 State Convention

By   April 19, 2020

From the Green Party of New York

Dear Green Party members,

We hope you are keeping well and safe during the COVID-19 pandemic although we know our state has been severely impacted by this public health crisis. The Green Party of New York has taken this into consideration so the 2020 presidential preference vote will be conducted by absentee ballot instead of an in-person State Party Nominating Convention.

All GPNY Members (enrolled New York State Greens and Supporting Members legally barred from registering to vote) are invited to participate in our presidential preference vote by absentee ballotDownload, print, and mail to the address listed on the absentee ballot linked hereBallots must be postmarked by May 9th.

Greens will need to provide, with their ballot, information to enable verification of their Green Party enrollment or Supporting Member status.

There are 3 candidates on the GPNY absentee ballot: Howie Hawkins, Dario Hunter, and David Rolde. GPNY’s State Committee decided in February that the candidates who met the Green Party of the United States criteria for official recognition on April 1, 2020 would be the candidates on the GPNY ballot. These 3 candidates are the only ones to have met that benchmark.

A candidate’s forum between Hawkins, Hunter, and Rolde will be livestreamed prior to May 9th. Stay tuned for a follow-up announcement with the date/time and details on how to watch the livestream. In the meantime, you can find links to candidates websites and questionnaires here and the latest campaign news here.

Please also plan to join us on Saturday, May 16 for our “virtual” State Nominating Convention! The results of the presidential preference absentee ballot vote will be announced. Candidates who have won delegates will be invited to speak. Delegates will then be nominated and elected to attend the Green Party National Convention scheduled to take place July 9-12, in Detroit, Michigan. Stay tuned for agenda details and guest speakers.

Fill out the RSVP form to attend the May 16 ConventionAn RSVP is requested for everyone in order to join the meeting. Only GPNY members (New York State enrolled Greens or Supporting Members legally barred from registering to vote) may vote. The form will help us to verify your enrollment or Supporting Member status and activate you in our database as an eligible voter.

For further details, go towww.gpny.org/2020convention.

In solidarity,

Gloria & Peter

Petitioning Time – Please Give Your Signature!

By   February 26, 2020
Hello registered Greens living Brooklyn!

Petitioning for the Green Party of New York State Committee began yesterday, and petitions must all be filed by April 2. For Brooklyn, we need 150 signatures for our State Committee slate. That might not seem like a lot, but because only registered Greens living in Brooklyn can sign our petitions, it tends to be labor intensive!

It would help a great deal if all of you registered Greens could email us at info@gpbk.org with your contact information (name, cell phone, email address, and the best place to meet you to get a signature). The sooner you can do that, the better! (Also, if you’re available to help gather signatures, please let us know.)

And don’t forget to take action to get New York State to divest its pension fund from fossil fuels!
Contact State Senator Brian Kavanagh

The DivestNY campaign needs just one more New York State Senate sponsor for the divestment bill (S2126). The New York public pension fund still has $13 billion in taxpayer money invested in fossil fuels, directly funding the rapidly accelerating climate crisis. Contact Senator Kavanagh and tell him to sponsor this bill! Especially if you’re one of his constituents (living in Senate District 26).
