Boro Prez Caught In Hummergate02.10.08

The New York Daily News recently ran a story exposing Brooklyn Boro Prez Marty Markowitz’s illegal parking habits around borough hall. Tipped off by the vigilante traffic code enforcement From the Uncivil Servants websiteblog  Civil Unservants, the Daily News reported that Mr. Markowitz parked his SUV illegally on Parks Department property, at the same time a hearing was being held on parking and traffic abuses in the Borough Hall area. Apparently, this was not the first time a Borough President-linked parking violation has been noticed. It would seem Mr. Markowitz made it policy for he and his staff to use public park space as a private parking spot.

Above and beyond the outrage of the B.P.’s parking behavior, why isn’t anyone demanding to know why Marty needs an SUV anyway?! As a big booster of Mayor Bloomberg, you’d think Mr. Markowitz would have taken some time to read the mayor’s controversial PlaNYC. Will the Borough President be seeking amnesty from congestion pricing? During Gloria Mattera’s Brooklyn Borough President’s campaign in 2005, the Green Party pointed out the irresponsibility of Mr. Markowitz continuing to drive a gas-guzzling SUV. With all the rumors of Marty’s desire to run for mayor, the Green Party and other congestion pricing advocates must pressure the Mayor’s office and our state reps to implement the plan soon.
